COVID-19: Eye Care while Working From Home

Majority of us are spending hours on our laptops while working from home. This is naturally putting a great deal of strain on our eyes. Symptoms include severe discomfort, redness, excessive blinking, rubbing, and abnormal eye movements.

Spending long periods of time before the laptop screen can lead to eye strain or in extreme cases- Squint or Double Vision. The blue light emitted from screens is harmful to your eyes. Mild to extreme dry eye impacts our general health adversely as well as our daily work productivity.

Here are some tips to protect your eyes and to keep your eyes healthy from too much screen time while working from home:
  • Keep your distance: Monitor or screen about 25 inches away.
  • Blink: Train your brain to take intervals from continuous screen viewing.
  • Reduce glare: Try using a matte screen filter.
  • Adjust lighting: Reduce the screen brightness, adjust room lighting, and try increasing the contrast on your screen. Do not use your laptop in a dark room with only the light of the screen or it may add to the strain on the eyes.
  • Give your eyes a break: Remember to blink and follow 20-20-20 rule. Take a break every 20 minutes by looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Keep eyes moist: Use artificial teardrops.
  • Stop using devices before bed: Too much blue light exposure late at night from your phone or other devices may make it harder to get to sleep. Limit screen time one to two hours before bedtime.
