Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy is a worldwide epidemic as Diabetes affects multiple organs in the body. One of the organs most severely affected is the Eye or more precisely the RETINA. [i.e. the inner lining of the eye]

Diabetes causes damage to the walls of the blood vessels in the retina, leading to leakage of the fluid and proteins, which get deposited in the retina. It also leads to the development of abnormal blood vessels called “NEOVASCULARIZATION”. These can rupture and cause bleeding in the retina and vitreous, leading to permanent visual damage.

At Vin-R Eye Care Centre, we check diabetic patients using Optical Coherence Tomography [OCT], TOPCON, [JAPAN] to scan the retina and specialized lenses like 90D, 78D for Slit Lamp Biomicroscope and 20D with Indirect Ophthalmoscopy for diabetic retinopathy screening.

Intravitreal Anti VEGF and Triamcinolone injections are administrated for patients with DIABETIC MACULAR EDEMA.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition of the eye when the blood vessels of the retina are damaged and leak fluid or blood in an advanced stage of diabetes.

How is Diabetic Retinopathy diagnosed?

A painless eye examination by the Ophthalmologist can detect Diabetic Retinopathy. If it is detected, a special test may be performed where a dye is injected in the vein, and photographs are taken of the retina.

How to prevent vision loss in diabetes?

The key to preventing visual loss in Diabetic Retinopathy is to detect the condition early. Diabetics should have their retinas examined regularly to detect early signs.

What are the Symptoms?

There is a gradual blurring of vision. In an advanced stage new abnormal blood vessels start growing on the retina or the Optic nerve. These have weak walls and rupture frequently to leak fluid and blood in the field of vision.

How is it treated?

Early detection is important. In more advanced case, control of further damage leads to improvement of vision The leaking vessels are sealed by Laser to stop further leakage.
